Untouched Beauty: Long Island Beaches

Stimulated:
I love the Bahamas, with all its endless beaches and breathtaking escapes. But for those of us who occasionally like to live on the wild side, whose eyes, ears and entire being is stimulated by exploring and discovering new things. Then its time for you to “Snap into a Slim Jim”!!!

Some of you won’t understand my anecdotal reference, unless like me you’ve been bombarded with countless mind numbing western commercials, that occasionally seep through your pores and you realize gosh darnit the marketers have got me in their grasp. So I have digressed and back to ahem, ah yes discovering new things.

Discovering New Things:

So on my recent trip to Long Island Bahamas, where I reclaimed my inner ZEN and realigned my focus. I decided to do a little exploring. As I haplessly devoured every piece of reading material I could get my hands on in my secret cottage on the hill. I stumbled upon a careful placement by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, ah yes those sneaky buggers. That outlined all the problems, umm adventures I could get myself into if I got bored in my cabin. So always being a good sport, I took them up on their offer and fired up my trusty steed and was off to conquer a new island.

As I drove around the Island headed for the settlement of Clarence town, which would be my first stop. I allowed the wind to blow through my hair, and the warm sunshine to bead down upon me as my trusty steed and I became one with the road as we purred along.

Then just as easily as I had arrived upon it, I zipped past the sign that read ‘This way to Dean’s blue Hole’.
Putting my steed in reverse, and following the sandy road, and barely legible signs. I pulled into a beautiful beach cul-de-sac, that was breath taking to say the least.

What is a Blue Hole:
Just in case you’ve never heard of a blue hole before, a blue hole is an underwater sinkhole or a vertical cave as they are sometimes referred to; roughly circular by design.Their name is coined from the dramatic contrast of the dark blue deepwaters of their depth and the shallow waters that surround them. Measuring 202 meters in depth and roughly about 25-35 meters wide, Deans blue hole in the Bahamas is the second deepest known blue hole in the World.

Personally, I was too much of a chicken to go anywhere near the Blue hole, lest I slip in and make the morning papers. Just being there was enough excitement for me!

But check out the awesome video below of freediver Guillaume Nery who set a world record diving deans blue hole at 109 meters. ( Vivid disclaimer, the video below isn’t the actual footage of the world record dive, but it is actual footage of Guillaume diving Deans Blue Hole.)

The video rocks, turn your volume all the way up and enjoy!!!!!

Would you dive Dean’s Blue Hole?
