Sandals: Emerald Bay Bahamas

This is a guest post by Mark Brown. Mark and his wife Ann are the operators of Island Breeze Travel based in Michigan. They are certified Sandals Specialists and have a wealth of information to make your island trips more enjoyable.

Arrival at Georgetown

I recently had the opportunity to visit Sandals Emerald Bay on Exuma. Sandals Resorts sponsored a three island tour recently and on the list was the former site of the Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma.

I love the smaller, regional styled Caribbean airports. They have an old world charm that immediately lets you know you have left the big city behind and time is about to slow down. Just getting off the plane at Georgetown invokes a stress relieving sense of calm that needs to be experienced to truly appreciate it.

Clearing customs was no problem at all and directly after we were whisked away in waiting vans to our destination. The drive down the two lane roads was also very pleasant. What you don’t see here, is cars speeding along faster than they need to which is a nice change from some of the islands where crossing the street, can be challenging!

After a brief tour of the neighboring 150 slip deep-water marina, we arrived at Sandals Emerald Bay. This property boasts 183 oceanview and oceanfront suites and villas. In addition, every suite and villa comes with a butler trained and certified by the Guild of Professional English Butlers. Golfers will also appreciate the accompanying Greg Norman designed 18 hole Sandals Emerald Reef Golf Club.

Emerald Beach

Emerald Bay is also one of the nicest looking beaches I have ever been on. This beach just has to be seen to be believed. The pictures just don’t do it justice.

As if the beaches weren’t breathtaking enough, Emerald Bay decided to give their guests another reason not to ever want to return to their rooms, by integrating a massive free form zero entry pools that stretched from the main building to the swim up bar tower close to the bay. The swim up bar was a great place to hang out and meet new friends over drinks.

Seeking to enhance the unique feel of this property even more,  founder of Sandals Resorts Butch Stewart had the Drunken Duck Irish Pub constructed in Ireland, dismantled and shipped to the resort, reconstructed and placed on the site of the former kids club. If you go, make sure you check in with Kerry the Manager. She’s a Ireland transplant and full of the kind of Irish spirit that’s sure to keep you entertained.

Sales Manager- Suelin Simpson

After months and months of emails back and forth on clients heading to the resort, it was nice to finally meet Suelin Simpson, The Emerald Bay Sales Manager.
But like all good things, my time on Exuma came to pass way too soon. So if your in the mood for breathtaking beaches, being waited on hand and foot, and one of the most stress relieving trips ever; Sandals Emerald Bay is your place.  I cant wait to go back.

Yeah, a Sandy Slipper post! Thanks for the information Mark. When I was in Great Exuma I didn’t get a chance to really explore the Emerald Bay property like I wanted to. We were dropped off and the spa and left right after we were done there.

But to anyone wanting to check out the Exumas, please do. It is an amazing group of islands with some of the friendliest people you’ll meet anywhere.

    Cheers!

The exuma’s are definitely a place where you need time to explore and unwind. A drop off excursion will do you no justice, as my compadre Ryan has learned. Mark thanks again for the great info!

    Thanks Ryan & Fabian,

Just a couple footnotes: In December 2010, Sandals Emerald Bay went from all Butler Suites to a Concierge and Butler offerings. Sandals Emerald Bay will retain butler-service in its 33 Seaside Villas and 36 One-Bedroom Suites.

The remaining 114 rooms and suites at the property will become Concierge-Level, offering guests luxury amenities including his & her robes, in-room espresso makers and bars, 24 hour room service, as well as private concierge service with a dedicated check-in lounge.

And, we just had a couple come back from their honeymoon where they reported that it “exceeded their expectations”

One thing that our clients did, that we encourage all our clients to do is to rent a car at least one of the days and explore the island on your own. The locals love it when guests of the island venture off the resort and see a bit more of Exuma. One of the places they stopped at was Santana’s.

Rum Shop Ryan wrote a great post about Santana’s as well – http://rumshopryan.com/2011/01/04/best-lobster-in-the-bahamas-santanas-beach-bar-little-exuma/

Exuma is a quiet, laid back island. But my guess is it probably wont stay that way once more people discover it’s charms.
