The Staycation Part 2- Adventure Begins…

Tags

So with my accommodations all set and my palace feeling quite slept in. I decided to venture outside the palace walls and see what fun I could get into. As I meandered through the brochures, booklets and the handouts so conveniently left by Sharlene on the counter; my curiosity was peaked by one in particular, ‘Powerboat Adventures‘.

PowerBoat Adventures

Hmm, now this was beginning to sound like my kind of thing, but would the boat be all power and the trip a lackluster debacle with no adventure? Throwing caution to the wind, I decided to commit to a day in the Exuma Cays hosted by the Powerboat Crew.

As I arrived at the dock, I was pleasantly surprised by the booking attendant when she informed me that food and an unlimited amount of drinks were included in my package; the trip was beginning to look up already. After casting off, my happiness began to fade away as I watched several dark clouds begin to roll in, but as we steadily crept away from the city boundaries of the Nassau harbor, sunshine was present once again.

As I began to doze off on the boat ride, I was awakened by the squeals of several little girls as they began jumping off the front of the boat, as the deck hands moored the boat at our first stop.

As I made my way to shore i was immediately greeted by a tribe of Hungry Iguanas who invaded the beach like the 7th Navy beach battalion in Saving Private Ryan. Taking instruction from the crew we all proceeded to feed the Iguanas grapes, using branches that were strewn about the beach. As if instinctively, the Iguanas started to do a collective parade, that involved them scrambling up and down the beach trolling for grapes and carelessly playing with their fellow comrades; definitely a true natural sight to behold.

As our time came to an end rather quickly, everyone gathered into the boat hoping that our next stop would be even more eventful than the first. As we took a quick 4 minute jolt to our next destination, our captain gave us an exhilarating ride that could easily be compared to a ride at your local six flags theme park.

As we disembarked and set foot upon Ship channel cay, I eagerly attended to the rumbling in my stomach by downing a few sandwiches and making short work of their nachos and salsa presentation. After appeasing my early cravings, I set about joining the line for the 1st of many cocktails that were sure to be consumed today.

After making off like a bandit with three cocktails in hand, I proceeded to find me a comfortable perch where I could survey the days activities and relax while I reenacted my best Hemingway impression. As I stood up for a brief moment to get a closer look, while Brownie the local chef prepared lunch with three vicious looking stingrays swimming around his feet.

Another island resident had slid in and taken my comfortable perch for himself. Tones as he is affectionately called was the culprit, who very often asserts his squatters rights anywhere he deems fit along the beach.

After being unwittingly evicted from my perch, I decided this called for another round of cocktails before I attempted any of the activities that were rumored to be taking place next. As the name of the tour so perfectly outlined, I was in for the adventure leg of the trip. Before anyone could take a dip in the shimmering blue waters that lined the exuma shoreline, the stingrays and sharks had to be fed.

Not being one to shy away from adventure, I lined up with the rest of the thrill-seekers and we proceeded to quench our adrenaline fix. As we prepared ourselves to feed the stingray’s we were once again reminded that their poisonous barb was still in-tact and it was important that we didn’t run-away when they came nearby.

As the stingray’s glided along the water appeasing their appetite with bite size grouper portions, ever so often one of them would catch an unsuspecting thrill-seeker off-guard and make huge splashes in the water as if beckoning for more attention.

After all the wide-backed fishes were fed and happy, our guide announced that it was time to feed the sharks. As all of the participants took a few steps back, our fearless chef who also doubled as the shark attendant, stepped up to feed the sharks some discarded fish meat. As the feeding ensued everyone was in awe as the closest we have all come to a shark was watching Jaws in 3D and thanking the heavens it was only a movie.

With feeding time done, it was now safe for swimmers to splash about and the snorkeling to begin. As for myself being slightly drained from the days activities, I opted out and headed for lunch and another round of cocktails. All in all I would say the Powerboat Adventures lived up to their name.

If your ever in this neck of the woods and you have time for a day excursion, check out the Powerboat adventures crew and offer Tones a cold drink for me.

Stay tuned for Part 3 of the Staycation as I take you to some of the best eateries in town.
